Design process
I recently got a sewing machine and I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could design and then assemble a catch-all case for plein-air sketching.
After a few trial and errors I have a working prototype. I figured that I could revisit the design when I get better at sewing.
The main goal of this case is to create a rigid surface that can hold all of the materials I use when sketching. Ideally everything I need will be fixed to the inside covers so that I can hold the case with one hand and draw with the other. In order to achieve the rigidity and stability that I want I decided to use book binding boards for the covers and spine as well as elastic strips to hold my materials down.
Iām excited to test out the case as soon as I can. It should make my life easier, only having to grab one thing from my bag every time I have the urge to draw. The case should speed up the process of getting all set up for drawing/painting.
FIRST TRY
I am a beginner sewist so my skills are not up to par with my visions but luckily I have patience, time, and a good seam ripper.
My first try assembling the case resulted in the need for a bias tape finish on the inside. As I worked through the logistics of the case I realized that the bias tape finish would be better on the outside of the case as the zipper has the tendency to flip to the opposite side of the tape.
The bias tape construction on the outside gives the case well defined edges on the outside and more space for materials on the inside.
