(THESIS) RESILIENCY AND PREPAREDNESS CENTER
Portland, Oregon
DESIGN A RESILIENCY CENTER IN PORTLAND THAT WILL PREPARE THE COMMUNITY FOR THE NEXT BIG EARTHQUAKE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
This interactive disaster preparedness and resiliency center would be the first project of its kind in America. The program includes an earthquake shake room, a training room, and various other interactive exhibit spaces. This proposal brings opposing sides of the issue together: the cultural and scientific issues. There is a community center and an science center and in-between is an interactive atrium space that would serve as a resiliency center. The atrium is a formally expressive and interactive space that is meant to embody the spatial condition of a subduction zone.
SITE RESPONSE DIAGRAMS
Located in a key area, the project site sits in-between the only bridge in Portland that is projected to service a 9.0 earthquake and the Oregon museum of science and industry.
RESILIENCY BEACON
The goals for this project are for the building to be a beacon for resiliency and preparedness, accessible both physically and emotionally, and flexible for updates in technology. This rendering illustrates the initial idea of the building as a beacon. This location could serve as a meet-up point for families after the big 9.0 earthquake.
